I was really excited by and impressed with the BBC adaptation of Christopher and His Kind. There is so much here to love. Although the film is surprisingly short, seriously they could have made a miniseries out of this….and isn’t that what the BBC is for? Miniseries? They still managed to create a colorful adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s memoirs. The set decoration was great. Movies like this always make me yearn for the underground nightlife of Berlin pre-WWII….but then I remember what comes next.
Anyways, overall it was a strong albeit brief film. Matt Smith, the latest Dr. Who delivers a compelling performance as the title character. And there is a delightful appearance by Imogen Poots, a personal favorite, as Jean Ross, the inspiration for Sally Bowles.
If you get the chance, see it, enjoy it, don’t try to think too much about it, just delight in the fact that the BBC continues to bless us with these queer film gems.
p.s. additional images from the film to follow.
