I so wanted to love this movie.
Everything about it added up on paper, Ludivine Sagnier + Kristen Scott Thomas, sexual espionage, and the French language. But somehow it all failed to come together.
The story and script may have been solid but the production value was laughable. The score, comprised of smooth sitar-like pluckings, didn’t add to or escalate any of the tensions. Some of the sets looked sloppy and I also think it suffered from poor direction. These two actresses are forces of nature, some of the best, yet some of their lines and interactions weren’t delivered with the ferocity or the restraint I know they both have.
And lastly, perhaps one of the biggest crimes, was that everything between the two women was implied. Ok, I understand that their love was meant to be admiration tinged with jealousy, but they never followed through! Any moment where they could have fully fleshed out a character or relationship was just glossed over and forgotten.
Should you watch it? Probably not, only if you’re a fan of the actresses then do I recommend it, otherwise it was a lost opportunity to create something truly gripping and memorable.
